"The Pearl of the Altmark."
Whether you are traveling on business or pleasure, the 1000-year-old imperial city of Tangermuende is always well worth a visit. Back in the 14th century (1373-78), Kaiser Charles IV had the Tangermuende Castle rebuilt as second residence to the Hradschin in Prague. Our town on the Elbe is one of those German towns that have largely retained their medieval character and appearance. Indeed, Tangermuende is often referred to as the "North German Rothenburg".
