Location:
Where the journey is headed
The Hanseatic city of Rostock is a lively university town with a long history. A stroll through the city is the perfect way to explore all the most important sights. Even today, the city on the river Warnow continues to be shaped by seafaring and trade. Warnemünde is located directly on the sea, but even in Rostock itself you can literally smell the Baltic and the big wide world.
Discover Rostock
St. Mary’s Church is Rostock’s most beautiful and most significant church. The astronomical clock in the ambulatory is very impressive – after all, it has shown the time since 1472. The Town Hall at the historic Neuer Markt combines different architectural styles from gothic to baroque. At the northern entrance, look for the bronze town hall snake, because according to legend it is lucky to touch. Impressive are also the medieval Kröpelin Gate, which houses the city’s history museum, and Stone Gate, the historical entrance to the city including the heraldic beast.
Rostock with kids
Go on an expedition to the North and South Pole in the Polarium at Rostock Zoo, the new home for Humboldt penguins, polar bears and many other sea creatures. In the Darwineum, you can marvel at 150 animal species as a vivid illustration of evolution in the animal kingdom. Karls Erlebnishof with interactive workshops, activities and entertainment, is located just outside the city, but especially in bad weather is great fun for the whole family.
Free culture
The Rostock Cultural History Museum is housed in the historic Convent of the Holy Cross, which also makes it worth seeing from the outside. The permanent exhibition Rostock on Art Works and the exhibition of historic toys are especially recommended. Tip: Enjoy a coffee in the convent garden after your tour. The peace and quiet in the middle of the city will inspire you. And the best thing about the museum: admission is free.
A stroll down by harbour
Romantic harbour atmosphere, close to the city centre? It’s yours guaranteed in Rostock. Head east to the cafes, restaurants, museum harbour and harbour terraces. In the mood for more? Then hop on a boat’s tour on the river Warnow, past the shipyards, the overseas port and the skyline of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. And when the sea air makes you hungry, the perfect snack in between is a fish sandwich on board.
Warnemünde seaside resort
Warnemünde is located on the Baltic Sea at the estuary of the river Warnow. The little seaside resort may seem like a town onto itself, but it is in fact a district of the city of Rostock. Warnemünde’s landmark building is the 32-meter tall lighthouse. From the beautiful, wide sandy beach, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the jetty and the sea. The Baltic coast is a pleasure at any time of year. Even in spring and autumn, you can cuddle up in a beach chair by the sea. The summer months invite you to spread out on a towel, cool off in the waters, build a sandcastle or fly a kite. And in the winter, you can just let the wind blow around your ears on a stroll along the seaside promenade and by the breakwater before warming up with some hot sea buckthorn juice. A popular form of entertainment here that is free all year round is watching the cruise ships come in.
Like the locals
What do the people of Rostock do in their free time? When they go out on the town, they head to Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt (KTV), a district that is popular with students and young people. Here you will find lots of alternative cafes, shops and a variety of bars. Perfect for a pub crawl with short distances. On hot days, there’s stand-up paddleboarding on the Warnow in the city harbour. The best fish sandwiches are available at Fischbratküche in Rostock’s industrial port. Make sure to stop in to the Grubenbäckerei bakery. With some luck you’ll get a chance to try some real Prasselkuchen – puff pastry cakes with a buttery crumb topping and blobs of icing. A dream!
